Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid bin Muhammad Sa’id Al Linggi was born in 1918 AC in the village of Ampangan, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
Upon finishing studying in a local Malay school, Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid continued learning under the tutelage of his paternal uncle, Shaykh Abdullah , for approximately 3 years in the fields of Nahu, Saraf,(Arabic Linguistics) and Fiqh.
Following that the Shaykh studied under his elder brother,the Mufti of Negeri Sembilan, the eminent Al Muhaddith Shaykh Ahmad bin Muhammad Sa’id , for about 2 years.
Shaykh Ahmad was authorised by his teachers to carry the title ‘Al-Alaamah’. The name of whom are Al Imam Al ‘Alaamah Al Muhadith al Kahir Shaykh lJmar Hamdan Al Mihrasi Al-Tunisi , Al Muhadith Al Kabir Shaykh Sattar Al Qutubi Al Hindi , and also Sibawi at that time, Al ‘Alaamah Al Kabir Shaykh Ali Al Maliki , Al ‘Alaamah Al Kabir Al Faqih Shaykh Omar Bajunid , Al ‘Alaamah Al Kabir Al Faqih Shaykh Muhammad Said Al-Khalidi Al-Yamani . The Ulama mentioned above al taught him ilmu Nahu, Saraf, Hadith and Fiqh.
After learning from the Ulama mentioned above, Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid resided in Kota Bahru (Kelantan) for about 2 years with his teacher, Shaykh Haji Tahir Benut Payung , and others, studying ilmu Nahu till Shudur-uz-Zahab, Saraf, Almirah, Fiqab and 2 kitab Tauhid as-Sanusi and al Bajuri Kifayatut Awam, Mantik, Tasawwuf, ‘Arud, Qafi, among others.
Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid then went to Mecca in 1936 to pursue even greater depths of Islamic knowledge and studied under several renowned scholars in Masjidil Haram. Among whom include Al Alim Al Fadhil Mudarris Madrasatul Falah Shaykh Khalil ‘Uthàibiyah , a student of Shaykh Umar Hamdan Al Mihrasi . Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid also studied ilmu Nahu, Mustalah Hadith and Hadith Matan Al Bukhari. He also studied under Al ‘Alim Al Fadhil Shaykh Asmatullah Al-Bukhari in various fields of hadith, such as Muatha’, Munazarah and Isti’arah. He also studied Tafsir Jalalain and Qawaid Fiqah from Al ‘Alim Al Fadhil Hussin Palembang.
From his teacher named Al ‘Alim Al ‘Alaamah Al Adib An Nahar Shaykh Yasin Al Adib Al Mansuri , the student of Al ’Alaamah Al Kabir Shaykh Abdul Majid Al Laban Al Azhar , Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid learnt Nahu, Saraf, Syarah Jauharul Maknun (Balaghah Bayan Badi’), Al ‘Isti’arah, ilmu Arud, Qawafi, Tarih Nurul Yakin, Tarikh Khulafa, Tasawuf, kitab Bukhari, Tafsir Jalalain, Usul Fiqah Jam’ul Jawamik, Mustalah Hadith and also Tajwid. Deep levels of knowledge attained and a critical thinking mind were the fruition of his strenuous efforts in the pursuit of knowledge of various fields.
Al Ustad Mukhtar Al Fathani was also his teacher who taught him ilmu Nahu, Mantik (such as Tahzib), ilmu Usul Tafsir, ilmu Mustalah hadith, ilmu Tasyrih, Nahu, Usul Fiqah and others.
Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid then studied in Madinah for 2 and a hald months, after which he set off to Syam (Damascus) at about the time of the Japanese occupation of Malaya. He studied At Tahrir and Mahalli under Shaykh Abdul Kadir Asy Syamut and then studied under a great ‘alim, Al ‘Alim Al Alaamah Mudarrith Bikul-Liyatish Jamiyah , Shaykh Abdul Karim Ar-Rifa’i , various fileds of knowledge including Fiqh, Usul Fiqh, such as Lubbul Usul, Nihayatul Sul, Al Lumak, Mahalli, Wadha’, Hikmah, ilmu Ma’kulat, Fiqh and Mantik.
Under his teacher Al ‘Alim Al ‘Alaamah Mudarrith Bikul Liyatish Syariah in Damascus, Shaykh Abdul Kadir Asy Syamut who taught 4 mazhabs in his classes, Shaykh Haji Abdul Rashid studied ilmu Nahu, Saraf, Fiqah At Tahrir, Mahalli, Usul Fiqah Nihayatul Sul, Balaghab Jauhal Maknun dan Talkhis, Mantik Al Baijuri, Tarikh and Adab for 7 years. A lot can be learnt from Adab, for example, Al Hamasi amongst others but we just mention here in brief.
Shaykh Abdul Rashid bin Muhammad Said Al-Linggi is the younger brother of Shaykh Ahmad bin Muhammad Sa'id . After the passing away of his brother, Shaykh Abdul Rashid was appointed to lead the Ahmadiah Order. His efforts in spreading the dakwah and the teachings of the Ahmadiah Order are always remembered by the ikhwans in Singapore.
