The eminent scholar’s full name is Shaykh Haji Muhammad Sa'id bin Haji Jamaluddin bin Haji Idris bin Haji Abdul Mukmin bin Muhammad Nakhoda al-Minankabawi bin Ahmad bin Umar bin Salih bin Abdullah (from Hadralmawt) . His lineage from Shaykh Salih bin Abdullah continues up all the way to Saiyidina Ibn Abbas .
His mother, Hajah Safiah bint Haji Muhamad Saleh Al Fatani, was from Patani, herself a well known Quranic recitor who was once teaching in Mecca. His father, Shaykh Haji Muhamad Saleh , was a well known scholar was was married to Mariam, the daughter of Shaykh Abdul Rashid Al-Fatani (the only Malay to have ever taught at Masjidil Aqsa). Hajah Safiah traces her lineage all the way up to Saiyidina Uthman .
Shaykh Haji Muhammad Sa'id was born in Syi'b Ali in Mecca on Saturday 4 Syaaban 1292H / 18 September 1871.[1]
He was then brought back to Patani in 1882 at the age of 7. There he was looked after by his mother and grandmother (Mariam). At the age of 17, he set off to Mecca, the land of his birth.
Among his teacher in Mecca who hail from the Malay world are: Shaykh Ahmad Khatib al-Minankabawi, Shaykh Zainuddin as-Sumbawi, Shaykh Wan Ali al-Kalantani and Shaykh Ahmad al-Fathani [2]. In Madinah, Shaykh Muhammad Sa'id studied under Shaykh Sayyid Jaafar al-Barzanji , Mufti of the Syafie Mazhab in Madinah al-Munawwarah. He has aso studied under Shaykh Muhammad bin Sulayman Hasab Allah al-Makki , Shaykh Muhammad Nawawi al-Bentani , Shaykh Sayyid Abu Bakar al-Syata , Shaykh Ahmad al-Mansyawiy , Shaykh Umar al-Syami , Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id bin Muhammad Babsil (Mufti Syafii Mazhab in Mecca), Shaykh Abdul Karim al-Deghastani and Shaykh Umar bin Abi Bakar Bajunid [3].

[4] Shaykh Haji Muhamad Sa’id was the khalifah or personal representative of Shaykh Muhamad Ad-Dandarawi to the Malay world. His “pondok” (zawiyah), set up in Ampangan, Seremban, was the first in the state. His students include many from both within and without Negeri Sembilan. Apart from that, he too often conducted classes in mosques and prayer halls. It is apt to say that he is knowledgeable in ilmu alat, usulludin, the 4 mazhab fiqh, tasawwuf, hikmat, philosophy, among others.
On 12 Rabiulawal 1345/18 September 1926, this unparalled scholar relieved his last breath. His body was brought to the cemetery at Kebun Bunga Seremban, attended by about 5000 muslims including his students and Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, the Head of State.
